Each year, the Journées d'Informatique Musicale (JIM) bring together researchers, developers, and professionals from the musical field who use computing as a tool for dissemination, creation, interpretation, or education. The JIM conference is organized by the Association Francophone d'Informatique Musicale (AFIM) and is supported by the Directorate General for Artistic Creation of the French Ministry of Culture. This edition, taking place from June 23 to 25, 2025, will be hosted at INSA de Lyon under the auspices of Inria and GRAME - Centre National de Création Musicale.
Schedule:
March 24, 2025 March 31, 2025: Submission deadline for papers
April 18, 2025: Deadline for reviews by the scientific committee
April 25, 2025: Notification of acceptance
May 23, 2025: Final paper submission deadline
Themes: In addition to the recurring themes (see https://jimlac25.inria.fr/jim/), this edition will emphasize the following topics:
Musical Computing and Frugality Frugal musical computing involves designing and using digital tools for music creation in a resource-efficient manner, thereby reducing the ecological footprint of musical technologies. This approach promotes lightweight software, open-source solutions, durable hardware, the reuse of existing objects, and performance optimization to prevent energy overconsumption while minimizing the "rebound effect," where efficiency gains lead to increased usage. JIM 2025 invites the community to explore this emerging theme, which is part of a broader discussion on the impact of digital technology on society, and welcomes contributions in this field.
Embedded Systems and Musical Computing Embedded systems now play a key role in various areas of musical computing. They are found in control interfaces, digital musical instruments for signal processing tasks, sound synthesis modules, and more. JIM 2025 will focus on these technologies and invites new contributions in this domain.
AI, Co-Creativity, and Musical Computing The growing presence of AI-powered systems in sound creation practices raises questions that intersect with many of JIM’s usual themes. AI opens new spaces for musical and technological exploration, which this edition seeks to highlight. JIM 2025 encourages reflection on these technologies in all their diversity and welcomes contributions exploring their uses, implications, and potential for musical computing.
Submission Details:
Papers may be written in French or English and should be between 4 and 10 pages. For papers in English, a French abstract is mandatory. Accepted papers will be presented through oral communications.
Submissions must be in PDF format, using the Word or LaTeX templates available on the conference website.
Young Researcher Award: Submissions from young researchers (PhD students, recent graduates, and independent researchers) are particularly encouraged. The AFIM Young Researcher Award will be granted to the best paper presented by a young researcher to support and recognize their work.
